WAKA-Navi α

  • Tokyo Youth Comprehensive Consultation Center "WAKA-Navi Alpha" is a free consultation service for young people generally from 18 to 39 years old, and their families who live in Tokyo.
  • We are doing E-mail consultation and visit consultation. Visit consultation is by appointment.
  • It is OK if you don't understand Japanese. We accept e-mail consultation in English, Chinese and Korean. If necessary, we accept visit consultation and our interpreter will assist you. If necessary, we can also accompany you to other support organizations and services.

Steps in the Consultation Process.

Notes (Before sending your consultation reservation form)

  • We cannot give you medical advice such as diagnosis, treatment of disease, or any opinions concerning such advice.
  • We will reply within 5 days after receiving your form. (Except Sundays and holidays)
  • We cannot respond immediately to urgent requests or emergency situations.
  • We take no responsibility for how our consultation, or information given during consultations, will be used or acted on, or the results of any actions taken as a result of these consultations or information.

Consultation Examples

School life

"I study at university, but I cannot make Japanese friends" (User A, an international university student)
I'm actively talking to my Japanese classmates, but cannot seem to connect with them. Is it because I have no ability and charm? I also feel that I’m being avoided by them.
I've been feeling stressed out. Recently I hit things and I want to yell at my classmates.

 

→ In the consultation, we ask him/her about why he/she is feeling stressed and irritated, and consider the issues together.
We introduce User A to a group that brings together international visitors and Japanese to remove stress due to linguistic and cultural differences in a place where they can speak frankly about their issues.

Official procedures

"I want to change my status of residence" (User B,a company employee)
I married a Japanese ten years ago and live in Japan now. My current status of residence is "spouse of Japanese.", but I would like to change to "permanent resident". I applied for permanent residence, but my application did not succeed. I plan to live in Japan in the future, but I do not know why my application failed, so now I feel insecure.

→ We ask User B about her situation, and introduce her to a specialist for legal counseling.

Work

"I cannot find a job and I'm on a tight budget." (User C, unemployed)
I was fired last month. I'm running out of money this month, so I feel very anxious about how to live in the future.

→ We ask User C about daily life in the consultation, then we identify and prioritize needs together. We contact and accompany User C to a consulting service for people with unemployment and income issues. We explain the current situation and help User C to use the service.

"I was filled with anxiety because I didn’t know what was going to happen. After I had a conversation with the staff I understood what I should do.

Child raising

"I'm isolated with my little child" (User D, stay at home mother)
I moved here for my husband's job. He is very busy everyday, so I spend the whole day alone with my little child. I don't understand Japanese. And I don't have any friends to help me and my family in Japan.

→We ask User D about her worries and what she expects in her community life. After that we introduce some places to meet and mingle with neighbors, such as local Japanese language volunteers and a mothers’ support group. Also we give her information about consultation services for non-Japanese residents in the local government.

I made friends with other mothers! I talk to them about my child and they teach me Japanese sometimes. I don't feel lonely now.

Renting/Moving

"I would like to rent an apartment, but I don't know what to do" (User E, vocational college student)
I live in shared residence with my friend who is going to return home soon, so I’ll have to live on my own.
However I don't know what I should do to rent an apartment.

→ We ask User E about the anxiety factor of moving, and make a step-by-step plan of the moving process together. Then we introduce User E to a real estate agent which provides multilingual support and so on.

About the future

"I feel insecure about my future." (User F, Japanese language school student)
My parents and relatives raised the cost of studying abroad for me, and finally I came to Japan.
I was intent on entering university in Japan after graduating from the Language school. However, learning Japanese was a little harder than I expected, Also I’m not used to Japanese life yet, and I Failed the EJU test. Now I can’t enter university this year.
Since then I have no energy to go to school. I'm just so sick of it all.

→We ask User F about daily life and the recent severe anxiety, then analyze the main issues together. After that we show F a range of support agencies, and consider which agency is suitable for User F together. If user F's physical condition gets worse, we will recommend User F to go to the hospital.

Finally I’m able to feel in control after the consultation. I'm going to the student counseling center in my school to think about the options in my life as you advised me.
